EUFAS editorial on reduced drinking in EAR

In June EUFAS had the honour of publishing an editorial i European Addiction Research. The editorial discusses a major shift in alcohol use disorder (AUD) research and treatment following the U.S. FDA’s decision to accept reduced drinking, not only abstinence, as a primary endpoint in clinical trials. President of EUFAS Jørgen G. Bramnes and former preisdent geert Dom argue that the long-standing focus on total abstinence has limited treatment development and discouraged patients, despite evidence that many can benefit from controlled drinking. Research shows that reducing alcohol intake improves physical health, mental well-being, and quality of life, and that medications are more effectively evaluated using reduction-based outcomes. The new FDA stance aligns with European practices and may broaden treatment access, encourage innovation, and support more patient-centered approaches to AUD care
